Through out the computer world it has a different language to all places. It is necessary because all the computers in the world need to communicate with each other efficiently, quickly and effectually some examples of this would be:
Point of Presence = POP
Network Access Point = NAP
Internet Protocol = IP
Transmission Control Protocol = TCP
File Transfer Protocol = FTP
Internet Service Provider = ISP
These are just a few out of many Protocols that the online world uses. This started within the 1960 when the american army first invented the internet. The internet is made up from a lot of connected computers around the world. These computers are called servers, there main purpose is to serve clients by connecting to them through a router. A router connects to these servers by using the back bone, the back bone is a big wire that runs down everyone's street and is provided by an internet service provider for example "BT, TalkTalk, Virgin, Sky" All of this services provide an internet service with there own bunch of computers.
The biggest internet service would be Google they have a gigantic amount of servers. That they provide to clients for free. This is maintained by advertisement space that Google auctions off to other companies.
So basically the internet is created by Millions of connected computers and cables that is able to send and receive information at light speed. The point of the servers is to serve clients and give them as easy access as possible to the stuff they want. The internet uses a lot of complicated protocols to provide the service you want easily and quickly
